Part Fifty Four

Stephen did better than cold cereal, even though he knew Adam would never complain.  He located some English muffins and fried a couple of eggs with sliced deli ham and shredded cheddar.  After wrapping the sandwiches in cloth napkins, he handed them to Adam.

"You can eat yours on the way," he said.  "I'll reheat mine at work."

He topped off their coffee cups and led Adam out to the car.  They both climbed into the Audi.  Adam ate while Stephen headed the car downtown.  He was curious to see where Adam worked.

As they neared the downtown core, Adam directed him on a route that neared the bank, but they were several streets away when they passed it.

"The bus line is definitely not the most direct route," Adam commented and then smiled.  "Not that I'm at all unhappy about being routed through town and forced to stand outside of your building."

Stephen had no argument against that, either.  The studio where Adam worked was somewhat off the main downtown region, in an area that held low, older-style cinder-block buildings, some with cheerful foliage or decor, but most with barren sidewalks dotted with weeds that grew up through cracks in the pavement.

A faded sign announced the name of the place and a convenient drop-off area, bordered in yellow paint, stood before the entrance.  Stephen pulled the Audi into the spot and put the car in park before smiling at Adam.  He felt suddenly awkward, wanting to kiss him, but they were in full view of anyone inside the glass doors or who might peer out the windows.

Adam bypassed the moment by leaning over and planting a soft kiss on Stephen's lips, tugging at his lower lip teasingly as he pulled away.  Stephen felt a warm glow and realized an undignified expression likely decorated his face.  "What time shall I pick you up?" he asked, striving for a normal tone.

"I'm finished at five," Adam replied.  "But I can hang around as long as you need me to, or catch the bus somewhere."

"I'll pick you up at five," Stephen promised, knowing his employees would likely faint to see him depart before six, but it was only for today; they would survive.

"Okay," Adam said.  His brilliant smile made Stephen's heart thump in a rather ridiculous fashion.  He admired Adam's thighs and amazing ass in the borrowed jeans as he slid out of the car, shut the door, and sauntered away.  Adam paused before the building entrance to give Stephen a jaunty wave and a wink.

Stephen drove away, feeling happier than he had in... years.  So sunny was his mood that he actually stopped to purchase pastries for his staff, arriving late in the process, and probably generating a week's worth of speculative gossip.

He didn't care.
