Equity Part Forty Seven
Mar. 2nd, 2010 09:08 pmAdam was electrifying. His voice was strong, deeper than Stephen had expected, but with an impressive range that carried him into the higher octaves at whim. He began with a rocking song that Stephen had probably heard in passing, but the crowd recognized it and cheered wildly.
Adam acknowledged them with a grin and a cocky wave, belting out the notes with seeming ease as he moved around the stage. It wasn’t just his voice that was amazing, but also his energy. His hips shifted in time to the drumbeats and his feet carried him from place to place on the stage as he seemed to sing to each person in turn.
Stephen felt the magic of a live performance like he’d never felt before, although he acknowledged that part of it could be due to Adam shooting him an intense stare every few moments, as though to remind him that even though he sang for everyone in the room, Stephen was the one that had awakened in his arms that morning.
Adam sang three energetic songs in a row and then slowed his movements to more of a prowl as he crooned the words of a slower song, giving the words a visceral twist that made Stephen catch his breath at the emotion it pulled from the suddenly quiet audience.
The applause was thunderous when he finished and Adam laughed aloud into the microphone. “How is everybody tonight?” he asked, but his eyes were on Stephen.
An assortment of answers rang out.
“I can’t hear you!” Adam yelled.
The shouts were deafening. To his surprise, Stephen found himself joining in and then laughed aloud at himself, especially when his delight was mirrored in Adam’s gaze. Stephen realized he was actually having a good time in public, something he had begun to think impossible, since he spent most of his precious free time alone, parked at home in front of electronic entertainment. Perhaps occasional mingling with humanity wasn’t such a bad thing.
“Oh my god, he’s so gorgeous!” a girl at the next table squealed loudly to her friend as she clutched at her arm. “I want him! I want him in my bed!”
Stephen frowned, realizing there were also drawbacks to mixing with the general populace.
Adam disappeared from the stage while the drummer carried on a thumping solo. Stephen hoped Adam was getting a healthy drink of water. While he approved of the perspiration that gave Adam a sexy glow, he did not want him passing out on stage from dehydration.
Adam returned just as the drummer finished the set and he launched into another song with a wave to the crowd and a sexy jaunt across the stage. He had changed out of the tank top and into a white shirt shot with just enough silver thread to give it a scattering of sparkles as he moved. It was open to the waist, exposing Adam’s incredible abs and causing the annoying fangirl to exclaim, “Oh god, oh god! I’m gonna climb up on stage! Should I take off my shirt?”
Stephen nearly spit his drink at the thought of what Adam would do at the sight of jiggling naked breasts—he had confided to Stephen that women were a mystery he preferred to remain ignorant about, which suited Stephen just fine.
Still, listening to the whistles and screams and viewing the glazed stares of lust directed toward Adam from both women and men, Stephen vowed to have a talk with Adam about inducing heart failure in the sex-starved by his choice of outfits.
The thought made him pause as he realized he had never cared enough about anyone to critique their choice of clothing. Damn it, what sort of spell had Adam cast over him that had turned him into an overly possessive jealous…?
Adam dropped to his knees to belt out the liquid words of a love song, singing directly to Stephen, and it all became clear. It was no spell, it was simply Adam, who was gorgeous and intelligent and sexy… and definitely talented.
As Adam moved away to grant his attention to the rest of the adoring crowd, Stephen realized he was going to be a star—it practically radiated from him like a visible aura. The future, usually so well-planned and pigeonholed into neat categories and timelines, suddenly became a yawning black hole of uncertainty.
Stephen had no idea how to handle it.
