Equity Part Fifty Six
AND then we're caught up! WOOT! OMG the cuteness, it BURNS! *giggles*
Part Fifty Six
Stephen could barely concentrate. Regardless of what he was working on, his thoughts kept returning to Adam. Even things that should have been meaningless brought a smile to his face, such as the methodical way Adam shaved. Watching him lather up and scrape the blade of Stephen's razor over his face had been unexpectedly pleasant. Stephen wondered if it was simply the fact that he had not shared morning rituals with anyone for longer than he could remember, or if it was just because it was Adam.
Whatever the cause, he felt a lightness in his chest caused by Adam's mere presence.
"For fuck's sake," he muttered to himself after reading the same document four times without any of it sinking in. "I've only known him a few days. He can't be that special."
He sighed and leaned back in his leather chair. Except that Adam was that special.
Seized by sudden inspiration, Stephen leaned forward and clicked open the Contacts list to open his email address book. He had a few phone calls to make.
When Stephen pulled the Audi up to the front of Adam's building, he was glad to see Adam already waiting. He looked delectable slouched against the wall in the classic pose of smokers the world over, trying to look cool, except that Adam didn't smoke. His leaning was without purpose, unless it was to stop traffic with his dark good looks and amazing body.
Stephen lowered the passenger side window with the push of a button as Adam smiled and pushed himself away from the wall. "Going my way, sexy?" Stephen called even as he mentally chastised himself for the cheesy line.
"Only if you plan to take me home and have your wicked way with me," Adam quipped, bending down to peer into the window.
"I think that can be arranged."
Adam opened the door and slid into the seat before leaning over to meet Stephen's lips in a kiss.
Stephen grinned and murmured, "It's nice to see you."
Adam sat back and fastened his seatbelt before giving Stephen a look that nearly took his breath away. "Yeah, you, too."
"Are you hungry?" Stephen asked as he pulled the Audi into traffic. He grimaced, remembering why he usually worked late--five o'clock traffic was hell. It would take forever to get home.
"I could eat," Adam said, as noncommittal as ever.
"Do you have anywhere to be tonight?"
"Only with you," Adam replied and then flushed when Stephen's surprised gaze snapped to his face. Damn if he wasn't the most adorable thing in the world.
Stephen smiled softly. "You're making me want a real relationship, instead of..." Whatever we have, he thought, but couldn't bring himself to say it.
Adam gave him a serious look. "Yeah, someday I hope to have a real relationship, too."
Stephen took a deep breath, hoping he hadn't imagined the bitterness beneath Adam's light tone. He asked, "How about today?"
Adam's eyes widened. "What?"
Stephen crushed a sudden rush of indecision. It felt like the right thing to do and, damn it, he had always listened to his instincts when it came to making important decisions. He plowed onward. "I'm asking you to be... exclusive. I know it's only been a couple of days and this is the most impulsive thing I've ever--"
"Yes," Adam interrupted.
Stephen stopped at a red light and faced Adam fully. His palms were damp where they gripped the steering wheel. "Yes?"
"Yes, of course. I want us to be exclusive," Adam said. "I'm surprised you want... I mean, you can have anyone..."
"I don't want anyone," Stephen growled. "I want you."
Adam's smile could have put the sun to shame with its brilliance. It made Stephen want to pull the car over and spend an hour just kissing him.
"You have me," Adam said, looking as though the unspoken plan running through Stephen's mind would be just fine with him.
"Then it's official." With the words, Stephen expected to feel somewhat shackled, but instead a it seemed as though a weight had been lifted off his chest. He felt like soaring. God, I must be crazy, he thought, but the idea of anyone touching Adam, of taking what was his seemed even crazier.
"We are celebrating," Stephen decided. He turned at the next light, making yet another impulsive decision--he had been full of them lately and so far they all seemed to be going his way.
Adam said nothing, but his hand moved over to rest on Stephen's thigh with a welcome warmth. Stephen reached down once or twice between shifting to squeeze his hand, feeling strangely infused with rainbows and sunshine, which was alternately disturbing and delightful.
